Key Fob & Remote Programming
A fob that won't sync, a smart key you just bought, or a remote that stopped talking to your car after a battery swap — we program it at your vehicle, no dealer visit needed.
Call (262) 325-7879How much does key fob programming cost? Fob, remote, and smart key programming at ATD Automotive starts at $195, whether it's a standard remote, a high-security Kia/Hyundai key, or a Nissan combo key. We program it at your car's location using the same class of diagnostic equipment a dealership uses — no tow required.
Fobs fail for a lot of reasons that have nothing to do with the key itself — a dead 12V battery, a module reset after other electrical work, a used car that came with a fob nobody ever paired. Whatever got you here, programming a fob to a vehicle's immobilizer isn't something you can do with a screwdriver and a YouTube video on most modern vehicles; it takes equipment that talks to the car's computer. We carry that equipment in the vehicle, so the job happens wherever your car is.
"Fob," "remote," and "smart key" get used loosely, but they're not identical. A remote typically just locks, unlocks, and maybe pops the trunk from a distance, working alongside a separate metal key. A smart or proximity key does more — it lets the car detect the key is nearby and allows push-button start, sometimes without the key ever leaving your pocket. Both need to be electronically paired to the vehicle before they'll work, and both are handled the same way on our end: through the diagnostic port, at your car.
How key fob programming works
- Tell us your vehicle and situation. Year, make, model, and whether you have a working fob already or need a new one supplied.
- We confirm the right fob. If you need a new one, we bring the correct part for your vehicle; if you already have one, we verify it's compatible before starting.
- We connect to your vehicle's diagnostic port. This is how the fob gets paired to your car's immobilizer — it's the same connection point a dealer's equipment uses.
- We program and test. Lock, unlock, remote start (if equipped), and push-button start are all tested before we leave.
- We show you it works. No guessing — you see the fob operate the car before we consider the job done.

What affects your price
The starting price assumes a standard programming procedure and, in most cases, a fob you already own. If we need to supply the fob itself, that part cost is added on top of the programming fee. Some manufacturers require additional steps — erasing old fobs before adding a new one, or a longer relearn sequence for high-security systems — which can shift the final price. As with our other services, we confirm the specifics for your vehicle before we head out, not after.
When you need this service
- Your fob or remote suddenly stopped working, especially after a battery replacement
- You bought a used car and it came with an unprogrammed spare fob, or none at all
- You bought a replacement fob online and need it paired to your car
- Push-button start stopped recognizing the key in your pocket
- You want a backup remote in case your primary one is lost or damaged
Mobile beats a dealer trip
Fob and smart key programming is one of the areas where dealer pricing runs highest — dealerships often charge $300–$600+ for a smart key once the part and programming labor are combined, and most require the car to be dropped off, sometimes with a wait for the correct fob to arrive. We bring the fob or program the one you have at your home, office, or a parking lot, and quote a firm starting price before we arrive. There's also no service department scheduling to work around — most fob jobs happen the same day you call.
If the problem turns out to be a lost key rather than just a fob, see our car key replacement page — we handle both in the same visit when needed. For older vehicles with a chip but no remote function, see transponder keys. We regularly work fob and remote calls throughout Kenosha County, Racine and Burlington, and Crystal Lake, and cover fob types across GM, Ford/Lincoln, Toyota/Lexus, Honda/Acura, Nissan/Infiniti, and Kia/Hyundai — see keys by make for specifics. Dealerships needing volume fob programming should see our dealer services page.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does key fob programming cost?
Fob, remote, and smart key programming starts at $195. High-security Kia/Hyundai keys and Nissan remotes/combo keys are also priced from $195. Exact cost depends on your vehicle and whether we're supplying the fob or programming one you already have.
Can you program a fob I bought online?
In many cases, yes — if it's the correct part for your exact year, make, and model. Aftermarket and off-brand fobs vary in quality and compatibility, though, so tell us what you bought before we come out and we'll confirm it'll work.
My fob works sometimes and not others — is that a programming issue?
Usually not — intermittent fobs are almost always a battery or a worn button contact, not a programming problem. If replacing the battery doesn't fix it, the fob itself may need to be replaced and reprogrammed, which we can do on-site.
Do you program push-button-start / proximity keys, not just remotes?
Yes. Smart keys and proximity fobs (the ones that let you start the car with the key in your pocket) are programmed the same way as standard remotes — on-site, through your vehicle's diagnostic port, with no tow required.
Why did my fob stop working after a battery replacement or new alternator?
Some vehicles' immobilizer systems reset or drop fob pairing after certain electrical work, especially a disconnected or dead 12V battery. If your fob suddenly won't communicate with the car, that's a straightforward re-programming job, not a broken fob.
How many fobs can a car have programmed at once?
Most vehicles support two to four fobs. If you're adding a fob to a car that already has one working, we can usually program the new one without erasing the existing one — the exact limit depends on the vehicle.
Is this cheaper than the dealer?
Generally yes. Dealerships often charge $300–$600+ for a smart key including the fob and programming, and require the car on their lot. We come to you and quote a firm price for your specific vehicle over the phone.
New or replacement fob won't sync? We'll program it in your driveway.
Tell us your vehicle's year, make, and model — we'll quote you over the phone. Based in Genoa City, serving Southeast Wisconsin & Northern Illinois.
