Honda & Acura Key Technology, Generation by Generation
Honda and Acura share the same corporate parent and much of the same electronics, so their key systems have evolved together. Older Hondas and Acuras from before the late 1990s used simple mechanically-cut keys with no chip. Starting in the late 1990s, most models transitioned to transponder (chip) keys, where a chip embedded in the key head has to be recognized by the immobilizer system before the engine will start — this generation covers the vast majority of Hondas and Acuras still on the road today. More recently, many Honda and Acura models — particularly newer CR-Vs, Accords, Pilots, and Acura SUVs and sedans — have shifted to proximity fobs with push-button start, where the fob only needs to be nearby rather than inserted into the ignition.
Because Honda and Acura key systems are fairly standardized across the model lineup, most jobs come down to identifying your specific key generation, cutting the correct blade if needed, and programming the chip or fob to your vehicle. We bring the equipment to do that on-site.
We confirm your Honda or Acura's exact key generation using its VIN and existing key before cutting or programming anything, so you know the price up front rather than after the work is done.
ATD vs. the Dealership
A Honda or Acura dealership can cut and program keys too, but typically only during business hours with your car on their lot, often after scheduling an appointment days out. We come to your Civic, Accord, or MDX wherever it is — home, work, or roadside — and usually finish in one visit, often for less than dealer pricing.

Models We Work On
We regularly handle key and fob work on popular models including the Honda Civic, Accord, CR-V, and Pilot, along with the Acura MDX, TLX, and RDX, plus older Honda and Acura cars and SUVs. Civic and CR-V calls are especially common given how many are on the road locally. Not seeing your model? Call with your year, make, and model for specifics.
When to Call
- All your Honda or Acura keys are lost and you need a replacement from scratch
- Your key fob stopped locking, unlocking, or starting the vehicle
- The key turns but the engine won't start — often a transponder programming issue
- You're locked out and need entry without damaging the car
- You want a spare key cut before winter driving season or before your only key wears out

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a Honda or Acura key replacement cost?
Standard Honda and Acura keys start at $165, with extra copies from $10. Transponder (chip) keys start at $245, with extra copies from $65. Exact pricing depends on your model and year — call for a firm quote.
Does my Honda or Acura use a chip key?
Most Hondas and Acuras built since the late 1990s use transponder keys that must be programmed to the vehicle's immobilizer. Many newer Honda and Acura models — especially since the mid-2010s — use proximity fobs with push-button start instead of a traditional key.
Can you make a Civic or Accord key if I lost all my keys?
Yes. All-keys-lost is a common call for Civics, Accords, and CR-Vs. We can cut and program a new key or fob on-site using your vehicle's identification, without a tow to the dealer.
My Honda key turns but the car won't start — is that a key issue?
That's typically a transponder communication problem rather than a mechanical one. We can diagnose and reprogram the key on-site so it talks to the immobilizer correctly.
Do you cover Acura, not just Honda?
Yes. Acura shares much of its key and immobilizer technology with Honda, so we handle both makes.
Can I get a spare Honda key made before something happens to my only key?
Yes — spare keys and duplicates are one of our most common calls, and it's far cheaper to make one while you still have a working key than after you've lost your last one.
Locked out of your Honda or Acura?
Tell us your vehicle's year, make, and model — we'll quote you over the phone. Based in Genoa City, serving Southeast Wisconsin & Northern Illinois.
