Locksmith vs. Dealership vs. Towing
These are hedged, general-market ranges for comparison — not quotes from any specific dealership or towing company. Your actual dealership or towing cost will vary.
| Situation | ATD Automotive | Dealership (typical) | Towing (typical) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Locked out | from $95, we come to you | N/A — car must be towed to the lot | roughly $75–$200+ depending on distance, plus the dealer's key/lockout charge |
| Standard key replacement | from $165 | roughly $200–$350 | — |
| Transponder / chip key | from $245 | roughly $300–$500 | — |
| Remote / smart key | from $195 | roughly $300–$600+ | — |
| ECU / module programming | from $250–$300 | roughly $400–$800 | — |
Beyond the dollar difference, a dealership generally requires the vehicle to be on their lot — meaning a tow if you can't drive it — and a wait for a service bay opening. We come to your location instead, whether that's your driveway, a parking lot, or the roadside.
Honest caveats
- Every price above is a starting point, not a flat rate for every vehicle — final price depends on year, make, model, and the specific key or fob system involved.
- Some vehicles use more expensive key blanks, smart keys, or harder-to-program immobilizer systems, which can push the price above the starting figure.
- The $95 lockout rate applies to weekday, business-hours calls within a 15-mile radius; other times and distances are quoted when you call.
- Dealership and towing figures in the comparison table are general market ranges, not quotes from a specific business — actual costs vary by dealer, tow company, and location.
- Always call with your vehicle's year, make, model, and (if you have it) VIN for a firm, no-surprise quote before we come out.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are these prices final, or just starting points?
They're real starting prices, not bait pricing, but the final number depends on your vehicle's year, make, and model — some vehicles use more expensive key blanks or take longer to program than others. Call with your vehicle info and we'll give you a firm quote before we head your way.
Why does the price vary by make and model?
Key and fob hardware isn't universal. A basic transponder key blank costs a fraction of what a smart/proximity fob costs, and some manufacturers' immobilizer systems take longer to program than others. High-security systems (like late-model Kia and Hyundai) and smart keys generally cost more than a standard cut key.
Is the $95 lockout price always available?
The $95 starting price applies to weekday, business-hours calls within a 15-mile radius. Evenings, weekends, and longer-distance calls are quoted when you call — we still offer emergency service any time, the price just isn't the flat weekday rate.
How much cheaper are you than the dealership?
Dealership pricing for keys and fobs varies a lot, but our published rates are typically well below what dealerships in this area charge for the same key or programming job, especially on transponder and smart keys. See the comparison table below for hedged ranges.
Do you charge extra for coming to me?
No separate trip or service-call fee is added on top of the published prices for standard weekday service within our normal radius. Longer-distance or after-hours calls are quoted when you call, factoring in travel.
What information do you need to give me an exact quote?
Year, make, and model at minimum. VIN is helpful if you have it (it's on your registration or door jamb) because it tells us exactly which key/fob system your vehicle uses. If it's an all-keys-lost situation, also have proof of ownership ready.
Do you accept payment on-site?
We collect payment when the work is completed, on-site. Call to confirm accepted payment methods for your job.
