Short answer: a standard Toyota, Lexus, or Scion key starts at $165, a transponder key starts at $245, and ECU flashing (when needed) starts at $300. Final price depends on your model, year, and how many keys the vehicle has left — call (262) 325-7879 for a firm quote.

Toyota & Lexus Key Technology, Generation by Generation

Toyota, Lexus, and Scion share the same corporate parent and closely related key systems. Older Toyota and Lexus vehicles from before the late 1990s used plain mechanically-cut keys. From the late 1990s through the 2000s, most models moved to transponder (chip) keys, where a chip in the key head has to be recognized by the vehicle's immobilizer before it will start — this generation makes up a large share of Toyotas and Lexus vehicles still on the road. More recently, many Toyota, Lexus, and Scion models have adopted smart proximity keys with push-button start, particularly on newer Camry, RAV4, Highlander, and most Lexus trims.

One thing that sets Toyota and Lexus apart from some other makes: certain all-keys-lost situations, and some key-programming jobs, require flashing (reprogramming) the vehicle's ECU — its engine control module — rather than just programming the key itself. That's a more involved step, which is why it's priced separately. We carry the equipment to identify which path your vehicle needs and complete the job on-site.

We confirm your Toyota, Lexus, or Scion's exact key generation and whether ECU flashing is required using its VIN and existing key before starting any work, so you know the price up front.

ATD vs. the Dealership

A Toyota or Lexus dealership can also cut keys and flash the ECU, but usually only during business hours with the car on their lot, sometimes over multiple visits. We come to your Camry, RAV4, or RX wherever it is and typically finish in one visit, often for less than dealer pricing.

Models We Work On

We regularly handle key and fob work on popular models including the Toyota Camry, Corolla, RAV4, and Highlander, along with Lexus RX and ES models, plus Scion tC and xB. Camry and Corolla calls are especially common given how many are on the road locally. Not seeing your model? Call with your year, make, and model for specifics.

When to Call

  • All your Toyota, Lexus, or Scion keys are lost and you need a replacement from scratch
  • Your smart key fob stopped working or won't start the car
  • The key turns but the engine won't start — often a transponder or immobilizer issue
  • A dealer or another shop told you the job requires ECU flashing
  • You want a spare key made before a long drive or Wisconsin winter

We also work with car dealerships on Toyota and Lexus key origination and programming. For local coverage, see our Milwaukee and Lake County, IL service area pages.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a Toyota or Lexus key replacement cost?

Standard Toyota, Lexus, and Scion keys start at $165. Transponder (chip) keys start at $245. When a job requires ECU flashing — reprogramming the vehicle's engine control module — that starts at $300. Exact pricing depends on your model and year.

Does my Toyota or Lexus use a chip key?

Most Toyotas and Lexus models built since the late 1990s use transponder keys. Many newer Toyota, Lexus, and Scion models use proximity smart keys with push-button start, especially on higher trims.

What is ECU flashing and why would my Toyota need it?

ECU flashing reprograms your vehicle's engine control module so it recognizes a new key or immobilizer setup. Certain Toyota and Lexus all-keys-lost situations require this step, which is why we offer it starting at $300.

Can you make a Camry or RAV4 key if I lost all my keys?

Yes. All-keys-lost is a common call for Camrys, Corollas, and RAV4s. We can cut and program a new key or fob on-site, including ECU flashing if your situation requires it.

Do you work on Lexus and Scion, not just Toyota?

Yes. Lexus and Scion share much of Toyota's key and immobilizer technology, and we handle all three.

My Toyota smart key won't start the car even though it's inside the vehicle — what's wrong?

That's usually a dead fob battery or a programming/communication issue rather than a mechanical problem. We can diagnose it on-site and reprogram or replace the fob as needed.
