Toyota, Lexus, and Scion share the same corporate parent and closely related key systems. Older Toyota and Lexus vehicles from before the late 1990s used plain mechanically-cut keys. From the late 1990s through the 2000s, most models moved to transponder (chip) keys, where a chip in the key head has to be recognized by the vehicle's immobilizer before it will start — this generation makes up a large share of Toyotas and Lexus vehicles still on the road. More recently, many Toyota, Lexus, and Scion models have adopted smart proximity keys with push-button start, particularly on newer Camry, RAV4, Highlander, and most Lexus trims.

One thing that sets Toyota and Lexus apart from some other makes: certain all-keys-lost situations, and some key-programming jobs, require flashing (reprogramming) the vehicle's ECU — its engine control module — rather than just programming the key itself. That's a more involved step, which is why it's priced separately. We carry the equipment to identify which path your vehicle needs and complete the job on-site.

ATD vs. the Dealership

A Toyota or Lexus dealership can also cut keys and flash the ECU, but usually only during business hours with the car on their lot, sometimes over multiple visits. We come to your Camry, RAV4, or RX wherever it is and typically finish in one visit, often for less than dealer pricing.
