Ford and Lincoln share much of the same electronics and key architecture, so their key history tracks closely together. Older Fords and Lincolns from the 1990s used plain mechanically-cut keys with no chip. Starting in the late 1990s and accelerating through the early 2000s, most Ford and Lincoln models adopted transponder (chip) keys — a small chip in the key head that has to be recognized by the vehicle's PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) before the engine will start. Later, many models moved to keys with an integrated remote for locking and unlocking, and more recent Ford and Lincoln SUVs and higher trims now commonly use proximity fobs with push-button start and remote start.
