GM Key Technology, Generation by Generation
GM has run through several key systems over the decades, and knowing roughly where your vehicle falls helps set expectations before we arrive. Many GM cars and trucks from the 1990s through the early 2000s used a resistor-pellet anti-theft system embedded in the key blade — the key had to match an electronic code, not just cut correctly, or the vehicle wouldn't start. By the early-to-mid 2000s, most GM models had moved to transponder (chip) keys, where a small chip in the key head communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer module. From the mid-2010s on, many GM trucks and SUVs — including newer Silverado, Suburban, and Escalade generations — shifted to proximity key fobs with push-button start, replacing the traditional blade-and-ignition setup on those trims.
Because GM shares platforms and electronics across its divisions, a lot of this technology looks similar whether you drive a Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, or Cadillac — but the exact programming procedure, key blade, and cost still vary by model and year. We bring dealership-level programming equipment to your vehicle so we can identify the right key type on-site rather than guessing over the phone.
We confirm your GM vehicle's exact key generation using its VIN and existing key or lock cylinder before we cut or program anything, so there's no wasted trip and no guessing at the price. If your Silverado, Equinox, or Escalade turns out to need a different process than expected — say, a proximity fob instead of a chip key — we'll tell you the adjusted price before doing the work, not after.
ATD vs. the Dealership
A GM dealership can cut and program keys too, but usually only during business hours, only with your vehicle on their lot, and often after scheduling a service appointment days out. We come to your Chevy, GMC, Buick, or Cadillac wherever it is — home, work, or roadside — and typically finish the job in one visit, often for less than dealer pricing.

Models We Work On
We regularly handle key and fob work on popular GM models including the Chevrolet Silverado, Equinox, Malibu, and Suburban; GMC Sierra and Terrain; Buick Enclave and Encore; and Cadillac Escalade and XT5, along with older GM cars and trucks. Trucks and SUVs make up a large share of our GM calls, since so many Wisconsin and Illinois drivers rely on a Silverado or Suburban for work or winter driving and can't afford to be without it. If your model isn't listed, call with your year, make, and model and we can tell you what to expect.
When to Call
- All your GM keys are lost or stolen and you need a replacement from scratch
- Your key fob stopped locking, unlocking, or starting the vehicle
- The key turns but the engine won't start — often a transponder or programming issue
- The ignition cylinder is worn, sticking, or won't accept the key
- You want a spare cut before a Wisconsin winter, road trip, or teen driver starts using the truck
We also work directly with car dealerships across the region on GM key origination and programming. For local coverage, see our Walworth County and Kenosha County service area pages.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a GM key replacement cost?
Standard GM keys start at $165, with extra copies from $10. Transponder (chip) keys start at $245, with extra copies from $65. Ignition cylinder coding starts at $65 per cylinder. Exact pricing depends on your model and year — call for a firm quote.
Does my Chevy, GMC, Buick, or Cadillac use a chip key?
Most GM vehicles built since the early-to-mid 2000s use transponder (chip) keys that must be programmed to the vehicle before the engine will start. Many GM trucks and SUVs from the mid-2010s onward — Silverado, Suburban, Escalade, and similar models — use proximity fobs with push-button start instead of a traditional blade key.
Can you make a Silverado or Suburban key if I lost all my keys?
Yes. All-keys-lost is one of our most common GM calls. We can cut and program a new key or fob on-site using your vehicle's identification, without a tow to the dealer.
Do you work on Cadillac and Buick, not just Chevy and GMC?
Yes. We cover the full GM family — Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, and Cadillac — including cars, trucks, and SUVs.
My GM key turns but the car won't start — is that a key problem?
That's usually a transponder programming issue rather than a mechanical one — the chip in the key isn't communicating with the vehicle's immobilizer. We can diagnose and reprogram it on-site.
What if my ignition cylinder is worn out or the key won't turn?
Worn ignition cylinders are common on higher-mileage GM vehicles. We can recode or replace the cylinder on-site starting at $65 per cylinder, without towing your vehicle.
